Travel guide
Thailand, the way it is really worth traveling
The destinations worth your time, how to pick the right island and itineraries you can actually do.

Thailand is several journeys in one: Bangkok and its river, mountain towns in the north, dramatic limestone scenery on the Andaman coast, and gentler island days in the Gulf. Your best route depends on the season, the time you have and the way you like to travel.
Use this guide to choose a few connected regions rather than spend every other day in transit. It covers the main first-trip destinations and worthwhile additions, with realistic lengths of stay, transport decisions and sample routes.
Which part of Thailand fits your trip?
Build your route around geography and weather first. These four starting points keep the journey manageable.
| Your trip | Suggested starting point | Why it works | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A varied first visit | Bangkok + Chiang Mai + Krabi or Samui | A city, cultural sights, mountains and a coast | Three stops are plenty in two weeks |
| A beach-focused break | Phuket and Krabi, or Samui and Phangan | Connected places and fewer hotel changes | Pick the coast according to the month |
| Nature and slow travel | Chiang Mai, Pai, Khao Sok | Mountains, forest, an extraordinary lake | Road travel takes part of a day |
| History and architecture | Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Chiang Rai | Temples and former capitals with different character | Choose two stops if time is short |
Start with Thailand's best-known stops
Begin with Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai. Choose two or three regions for your season, then add islands or another city if time allows. Each card starts with the useful short answer; open the detail only for places you are considering.
Bangkok
2-3 nightsCity and temples

Start early around the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, then take a river boat. Spend an evening in Chinatown; add Chatuchak Market on a weekend. Group nearby sights into one day because traffic can absorb more time than the map suggests.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: Riverside or the Old Town for temples; Sukhumvit for urban transport and shopping.
Tip: plan one unhurried river evening instead of crossing town repeatedly.
For a first day, start early at the Grand Palace area and Wat Pho, take the public river crossing towards Wat Arun, then save Chinatown or a riverside walk for the evening. Dress appropriately for temples and keep an indoor option for the hottest or wettest part of the day.
The sights are spread across different districts. Mix BTS or MRT trains, river boats and short car rides instead of expecting a single walking route. Check whether your onward flight uses BKK or DMK; they are different airports. Choose a hotel for the districts you actually plan to visit.
Phuket
3-4 nightsBeaches and convenience

Combine a beach day with the streets and heritage of Phuket Old Town. Patong has the widest range of urban facilities and nightlife; Kata and Karon suit a calmer beach stay. The island is larger than it first appears.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: pick one area that fits your trip before booking excursions.
Tip: allow real travel time between beaches and viewpoints.
Phuket is larger than most beach photos suggest. Give a day to Old Town, a day to your chosen beach and a flexible day for a boat or nature excursion. Patong is busy and convenient for nightlife, while Kata or Karon may suit a different beach mood.
Cross-island drives can be slow even when distances look short, so avoid switching coastlines repeatedly. Only commit to a sea trip after checking conditions, and allow enough time from the airport to your hotel. Pick the area you stay in for the activities you will actually do.
Krabi, Ao Nang and Railay
3-4 nightsCliffs and Railay

Ao Nang is a practical starting point for boat trips. Railay and Phra Nang Beach offer dramatic cliffs; Hong Islands or a short island circuit can fit a good-weather day. Railay has boat access rather than a road connection.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: Ao Nang for logistics, Railay for a stay in the scenery.
Tip: check your arrival boat, luggage and the last return boat if sleeping in Railay.
Ao Nang is a practical area for hotels and services; Railay supplies the dramatic cliff and beach scenery. Spend a morning on Railay, explore nearby accessible beaches, then keep a separate day for an island trip or nature walk. Railay is reached by boat, so plan around conditions and protect your belongings from spray.
Krabi Town, Ao Nang and Railay are distinct places when you book accommodation. Pick one to match your evenings and transport needs. Boat trips can be cancelled in rough seas, so leave a free day rather than filling every morning with prepaid excursions.
Koh Samui
3-4 nightsEasy island stay

Chaweng is the most service-rich area; Bophut is pleasant for an evening walk, while Lamai and Maenam can feel quieter. On a suitable sea day, consider a trip toward Ang Thong Marine Park.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: choose your beach district before planning daily island transport.
Tip: a large island is more enjoyable when you do not cross it every afternoon.
Koh Samui is a convenient choice with an airport, many neighbourhoods and day-trip options. Choose your beach for the mood you want: Chaweng is lively, while other parts are quieter. Mix a beach and market day with one flexible outing according to the sea forecast.
The island is large enough that a cross-island drive takes time. Compare direct flights with overland and ferry options by total time and cost. Consider the distance from your hotel to the pier or airport before booking connections.
Chiang Mai
3-4 nightsCity and mountains

Explore the Old City and its temples, take an early trip to Doi Suthep, then reserve a full day for Doi Inthanon or Mae Kampong. Nimman has a contemporary café scene, while the Old City makes walking between historic sights easy.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: Old City, Night Bazaar or Nimman depending on the pace you prefer.
Tip: bring an extra layer for higher elevations.
Spend a morning exploring the Old City temples, followed by a market or café afternoon around Nimman. Visit Doi Suthep on another half day. Doi Inthanon takes more time and is best treated as its own full day rather than squeezed in with every city sight.
Stay within or near the Old City for walkable temples, or around Nimman for a modern neighbourhood feel. Chiang Rai is a separate destination, not a short hop across town. Plan transport realistically, especially if you intend to change hotels.
Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay
day trip or 1-2 nightsIslands and boat trips

Visit Phi Phi from Phuket or Krabi, or sleep on Phi Phi Don if you want a quieter morning after the day boats leave. Maya Bay has changing access rules and seasonal restrictions.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: Phi Phi Don if you choose to overnight.
Tip: confirm park access for your exact date before buying a trip.
The islands offer viewpoints, snorkelling and boat trips, but boat traffic and conservation rules make operator choice important. Maya Bay may have seasonal or conservation access restrictions. Check the official current status and what a tour actually permits before paying.
A day trip from Phuket or Krabi works with limited time; an overnight stay on Phi Phi Don gives a different pace after day-trip boats leave. A famous photographed beach is not necessarily open for swimming. Avoid treating the destination as a guaranteed fixed itinerary.
Koh Phangan
2-3 nightsIsland and beaches

There is more here than the Full Moon Party. Choose west- or north-coast coves for a slower stay; Haad Rin makes sense if the event and nightlife are the main draw.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: check the real distance between your beach, the pier and local services.
Tip: party dates affect room availability even if you will not attend.
Koh Phangan offers more than its famous party: calmer northern and eastern beaches, viewpoints and slower days by the water. Full Moon events can change crowd levels and room availability around certain areas. Decide whether you want that atmosphere before choosing a beach.
Plan how you will get from the ferry pier to your hotel. Some island roads are steep or uncomfortable for inexperienced riders, so arrange local transport when needed. More remote beaches may be harder to reach after dark.
Pattaya and Koh Lan
1-2 nightsBeach near Bangkok

An option for a beach stop without a domestic flight from Bangkok. The city has a busy, commercial feel; a good sea day can be spent on Koh Lan if boats are operating safely.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: choose your neighbourhood according to the atmosphere you want.
Tip: it is easy to skip this stop if southern beaches are already on your route.
Pattaya suits a brief beach break within reach of Bangkok. For a change of scene, check the boats to Koh Larn and compare beaches such as Samae and Tawaen. Allow time to get back before the final crossing, especially if weather affects boat operations.
Choose your neighbourhood carefully because the city has both lively and quieter areas. A day trip has two journeys, the road transfer and the boat, so avoid a tight schedule. If you already plan several southern islands, this stop is optional.
Ready-to-adapt routes: 10, 14 or 21 days
Travel between regions uses holiday time. Keep a sensible buffer before the international flight home.
10 days · first-time essentials
- Days 1-2: Bangkok and the river temples.
- Days 3-5: Chiang Mai, the Old City and one mountain day.
- Days 6-9: choose Krabi or Phuket for one beach stop and a weather-dependent boat trip.
- Day 10: return to Bangkok or depart if your flight connection is genuinely comfortable.
Swap the Andaman stay for Samui if the forecast and season make it the better fit.
14 days · northern culture and Gulf islands
- Days 1-2: Bangkok.
- Days 3-5: Chiang Mai, with Chiang Rai only if the pace suits you.
- Days 6-9: Koh Samui.
- Days 10-12: Koh Phangan, beaches and sunsets.
- Days 13-14: Bangkok and departure.
Check the sea forecast and ferry options before locking in the island segment.
21 days · cities, mountains and the coast
- Days 1-3: Bangkok and an optional Ayutthaya day.
- Days 4-8: Chiang Mai and Pai at an easy pace.
- Days 9-14: Phuket and Krabi, including Railay and a free day.
- Days 15-17: choose Khao Sok for rainforest or Lanta for more beach time.
- Days 18-21: a nearby coastal stay, then a relaxed return to Bangkok.
Keep at least two flexible days across boat and long-distance travel.
When is the best time to visit Thailand?
The Andaman coast, the Gulf islands and the north do not share exactly the same weather pattern. Treat these as planning averages, then check the forecast.
| Months | Places to consider | What might change the plan |
|---|---|---|
| November-February | Bangkok, the north, Phuket, Krabi and many Andaman islands | Early-season rain may still affect the Gulf; peak-holiday demand can be high |
| March-May | Choose beaches by forecast; visit cities early or late in the day | Heat is intense in many areas; the north can have smoky periods |
| June-September | Samui, Phangan and Tao may offer a better coastal fit | Rain and rough seas remain possible; some Andaman excursions are limited |
| October-December | Choose the actual week and forecast | The Gulf can have heavier rain during this period; check ferries and parks |
These are patterns, not a weather guarantee. Check the Thai Meteorological Department, sea conditions and the park or operator before a boat trip. Seasonal access rules change.
Before you fly: passport, visa rules and TDAC
Thailand revised its visa exemption rules on 15 September 2026, so older travel articles may give the wrong length of stay.
Check the current Royal Thai Embassy list for your passport before booking. Under the rules effective 15 September 2026, ordinary passport holders from the listed 60 countries, including Israel, may qualify for up to 30 days of visa-exempt tourism. The immigration officer decides admission; longer trips require planning for an appropriate visa or a possible extension, which is discretionary.
Most non-Thai travellers, including children, must submit a Thailand Digital Arrival Card for each entry. Use the official, free Immigration Bureau site within the three days before arrival, including the arrival day. Keep your passport, arrival details and first address in Thailand handy. The TDAC is an arrival form, not a visa.
Confirm passport validity, onward-travel documents and airline requirements for your own route. These can vary by nationality and journey.
More of the Andaman coast
Phang Nga, Lanta, Khao Lak, Khao Sok and Koh Lipe. Add one or two extensions that fit your pace.
Phang Nga Bay
day trip
Take a boat among limestone formations and sheltered coves from Phuket or Khao Lak. Compare group size, time on the water and actual stops rather than relying on a single promotional photo.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: keep your existing hotel for a one-day excursion.
Tip: sea conditions may change the itinerary on the day.
Phang Nga Bay is about limestone cliffs, islands and, on some routes, paddling in permitted areas. Choose an itinerary that gives real time on the water instead of racing through piers. Tides, weather and local conservation rules determine what is possible on the day.
Tours commonly leave from Phuket or the Krabi area. Check the exact pier, road transfer and what the price covers. If you are prone to seasickness, compare boat types and forecast conditions rather than booking solely from a photograph.
Koh Lanta
2-3 nights
Long beaches, sunset views and Lanta Old Town make this a good place to settle for a few days instead of changing islands every morning.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: choose a west-coast beach based on quiet and access needs.
Tip: some businesses and ferries run differently in the low season.
Koh Lanta is well suited to several nights in one place. Northern beaches simplify arrival and services; farther south can feel calmer but is less convenient. Mix beach mornings, sunset walks and an occasional nature or boat excursion instead of booking a trip every day.
Travel time between beaches is easy to underestimate. Check your hotel's distance from the pier and the facilities you need. Confirm ferry availability and weather before arranging onward travel, especially if a flight follows.
Khao Lak and the Similan Islands
2-3 nights
Khao Lak is a quieter mainland beach town and a departure point for marine-park trips when the parks are open.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: near your preferred beach or trip departure.
Tip: marine-park opening dates are announced for each season; check before paying.
Khao Lak offers long beaches and a slower rhythm, plus possible inland nature trips and boat outings when they operate. The Similan Islands are not open every day of the year. Check official national park notices and sea conditions before making them the sole reason for your stay.
The area stretches along the coast, so pick your hotel for the beach and departure point you actually want. If pairing Khao Lak with Khao Sok or Phuket, allow a proper transfer day rather than assuming the stops are adjacent.
Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake
1-2 nights
Explore the lake by boat or choose a guided forest activity. Floating accommodation ranges from very simple to comfortable, so inspect what the booking actually includes.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: a village night or a lake night, depending on the tour timing.
Tip: take a dry bag and clothes that can get wet.
Khao Sok feels very different from a beach break: rainforest, managed trails and Cheow Lan Lake framed by limestone cliffs. A night near the village and a night near the lake can be rewarding, but reaching the pier and floating accommodation takes coordination.
Hikes and lake excursions depend on weather, water level and operators. Ask exactly how to reach your lodging, what the booking includes and when boats leave. A remote floating stay may not suit every family or mobility need.
Koh Lipe and the Trang islands
3-4 nights
For a longer trip, choose a quieter island such as Koh Lipe or explore the Trang coast and islands. Transfers take time and depend more heavily on seasonal boat schedules.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: pick one island for several nights rather than switching daily.
Tip: never book a tight ferry-to-international-flight connection.
Koh Lipe rewards the longer journey with several slower beach days and snorkelling when conditions permit. The Trang islands offer another quieter island route, but their ports and connections differ. Do not treat the two areas as the same ferry stop.
Before paying for a hotel, confirm departure pier, ferry season, baggage and the road connection. On smaller islands facilities can be limited, and rough water can change the schedule. Leave a buffer before any important flight.
More Gulf and eastern islands
Koh Tao adds diving and beaches; the Trat islands make a calmer separate coastal route.
Koh Tao
2-3 nights
A compact island known for snorkelling and diving. Pick an accredited dive operation and leave a free afternoon for a beach rather than cramming the whole island into a day.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: Sairee for convenience, a smaller bay for quiet.
Tip: allow for ferry changes when weather and sea conditions worsen.
Koh Tao is known for diving, but non-divers can enjoy beaches, viewpoints and snorkelling when conditions allow. Beginners should compare qualified dive centres, instruction and insurance carefully. It is fine to choose an easy beach day over another crowded boat trip.
The island requires a ferry, so leave a generous buffer before an international flight. Nang Yuan makes a popular short outing, with local visitor rules that may change. Check current access and conditions before setting off.
Koh Chang, Koh Mak and Koh Kut
3-5 nights
This eastern group offers three different paces: larger Koh Chang, small and quiet Koh Mak, and a more secluded Koh Kut. It is not an automatic add-on to Phuket or Krabi.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: choose one or two islands and plan the mainland transfer.
Tip: sailing schedules and conditions are more variable in the rainy period.
The Trat islands suit a beach and forest break without heading to the far south. Koh Chang is larger and varied, Koh Mak is small and quiet, and Koh Kood is suited to unhurried beach days. Choosing one or two islands is usually more satisfying than changing boats constantly.
The road journey from Bangkok, piers and island boats need a planned transfer day. Services vary by season and weather; do not assume a late arrival will meet the last crossing. Pick accommodation with a realistic onward route.
More of the north beyond Chiang Mai
Chiang Rai, Pai and Sukhothai take proper transfer time; Mae Hong Son suits a slower mountain route.
Chiang Rai
1-2 nights
Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, is the best-known stop; add the Blue Temple and Baan Dam if they interest you. The wider area, including the Mekong region, takes more than a rushed afternoon.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: central Chiang Rai for an easy start.
Tip: sights are spread out, so plan a driver or a focused route.
The White Temple is the best known stop, but the Blue Temple and Baan Dam offer a different artistic experience if they appeal to you. Leave room for a market or an ordinary city walk rather than turning the day into only a photo checklist.
Chiang Rai can be a long day trip from Chiang Mai, though an overnight stay is more comfortable if you want the evening market and nearby countryside. Check road times in both directions and do not schedule a tight return in the dark.
Pai
2 nights
Come for the valley, a sunset at Pai Canyon, seasonal waterfalls and a slower rhythm. Make time to wander rather than turn every viewpoint into a timed stop.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: central Pai for walkability or outside town for quiet.
Tip: the winding road from Chiang Mai is significant if you get motion sick.
Pai is best for a couple of easygoing nights: a night market, a viewpoint, a hot spring or a countryside excursion depending on weather. Pai Canyon has exposed paths and can be busy around sunset, so wear suitable shoes and keep a comfortable distance from edges.
The road from Chiang Mai is very winding. If anyone in your group gets motion sick, treat the transfer as a substantial part of the day. Choose a room near town for easy evenings or farther out for quiet views, with a plan for getting back after dark.
Sukhothai
1-2 nights
Cycle the historical park early among ponds, statues and ancient temple remains. It is a strong addition for travellers especially interested in architecture and the history of Siam.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: near the park for sunrise or in the new town for connections.
Tip: on a short trip, choose between Sukhothai and Ayutthaya.
Start early at the historical park around Wat Mahathat and its ponds, then add outer zones only if you have time and energy. Cycling is enjoyable in mild weather; a driver or two shorter visits may be better in the heat.
Sukhothai fits an overland journey between central and northern Thailand. Before booking, check whether your hotel is in the new town or near the historical park. The two areas offer a very different pace and require different transport plans.
Mae Hong Son
2-3 extra nights
A slower mountain extension with scenic roads, viewpoints and a small-town feel. The journey itself is part of the reason to go.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: near the town centre for local services.
Tip: leave it out of a ten-day first trip; travel days add up.
The Mae Hong Son area rewards travellers who enjoy the journey itself, with mountain viewpoints, small towns and trails chosen for the season. Leave time for stops and do not judge daily progress by map distance alone; winding roads can make short distances slow.
Staying in Mae Hong Son town supports a quieter town day and a countryside outing. For border area visits or longer hikes, confirm local access and choose a qualified guide where appropriate. Keep the route flexible when rain affects the roads.
Extensions from Bangkok
Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Hua Hin and Khao Yai bring history, forest or beach without a domestic flight.
Ayutthaya
day trip or 1 night
The former capital makes a rewarding day trip from Bangkok. Visit Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Chaiwatthanaram. Stay overnight if photography and quieter early hours matter to you.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: near the historical island if spending the night.
Tip: start in the morning and carry water for exposed temple grounds.
Choose two or three temple complexes rather than rushing around all the ruins at midday. Begin near Wat Mahathat and consider Wat Chaiwatthanaram when the light softens. Cycling is pleasant for confident riders in good weather; a local driver is more comfortable in the heat.
You can visit from Bangkok by rail or road, but the return journey and transfers between sites make this a full day. Staying overnight gives you time for a museum and an unhurried sunset. Book near the historical island if you want to explore without a long commute.
Kanchanaburi
2 nights
Pair the bridge and a history museum or memorial with a separate nature day around Erawan Falls, subject to park conditions. Staying over leaves space to understand the history and enjoy the river scenery.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: in town for connections or by the river for a quieter stay.
Tip: allow proper time for the wartime history behind the railway.
Set aside one day for the bridge, a museum explaining the forced labour behind the railway and a memorial site. Spend a separate day at Erawan Falls if you can. Trail access, swimming rules and conditions vary with the weather and park guidance; check before leaving.
The waterfall is well outside town, so arrange a suitable bus, driver or organised trip. Bring water, grippy footwear and a dry change of clothes. A riverside stay can be restful, but make sure it does not add a long transfer to every activity.
Hua Hin
2-3 nights
A relaxed beach town with markets and family-friendly stays. If you want a nature day, look at Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park and verify trail conditions before heading out.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: near the centre for markets, farther along the coast for quiet.
Tip: think of Hua Hin as a convenient coastal town, not the Andaman islands.
Build a slower day around the beach, the night market and the town. With another day, explore Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park for wetlands, viewpoints or caves, choosing an accessible route for the day's weather. It is a useful, steady place to stay for families.
Hua Hin works as an overland continuation from Bangkok. Check actual road or rail timings for your travel day. The sea looks and feels different by beach and season, so book for location and amenities rather than assuming every stretch resembles the southern islands.
Khao Yai
1-2 nights
Forest, viewpoints and waterfalls make a change from the capital. Trails and entry points depend on park rules and weather.
Open the day plan, stay, transport and practical tips
Stay: near the entrance closest to your planned route.
Tip: arrange transport; the protected area is too large to assume you can walk everywhere.
Khao Yai is large. A good day focuses on one or two areas, such as a waterfall, a forest trail and a viewpoint, subject to current park access. Give wildlife space, do not feed animals and remember sightings cannot be promised.
A driver or car makes more sense than expecting to walk between distant sights. Check which park entrance is closest to your lodging and confirm trail status before departure. Carry rain protection and footwear suitable for damp paths.
The travel decisions that make the trip easier
A good itinerary leaves room for the logistics that glossy island photos tend to hide.
Flights and ground transport: Bangkok has two main airports, BKK and DMK; check which one your ticket uses. Domestic flights can save a long overland day. Trains and road journeys can be part of the experience when time permits. Include the trip to the ferry pier and onward transfer to your hotel when comparing islands.
Sea and road safety: follow beach flags, current forecasts and local boat advice. Choose a properly qualified dive instructor. If you rent a scooter, check the required licence, insurance coverage and helmet rules first.
Budget: leave room for intercity transport, park fees and food. A well-positioned hotel can save more travel time than a slightly cheaper room far from your daily route.
Mobile data: maps, bookings and hotel messages are much easier with a connection after landing. Before buying an eSIM, check that your device is compatible and unlocked, the listed coverage and data terms, and when validity starts. Follow the package instructions for installation; if you keep your home SIM for calls or verification codes, check its roaming settings while selecting the travel eSIM for mobile data.
